File: MONAIRPC.HIS Last update: 05/18/1999 Created: 4/24/95 Update by: J. Anderson From file: CDNOAA.DBF USDA Jornada Experimental Range Headquarters Air Temperature and Precipitation Data ***************** HISTORY LOG ************************************** Temperature data is summarized from daily records recorded in NOAA.DBF Monthly Precipitation Summary data is compiled from 2 files: HEADQUAR.WK1 and CDNOAA.DBF. HEADQUAR.WK1 is Lotus spreadsheet created by USDA Jornada Experimental Range personnel with monthly precip data corrected and double checked by USDA's Bob Gibbens. CDNOAA.DBF is daily weather data reported by NOAA from Weather Bureau monthly data sheets from USDA Jornada Experimental Range Headquarters. The Problem code (=1) reflects when a descrepancy occurred between these 2 data sets. See below for dates of descrepancies and resolution. Note that precip value entered in data set is considered to be valid. Ambiquities in some precipitation data was noted during a comparison of monthly total precipitation data between NOAA (hardcopy and electronic) and photocopies of Weather Bureau summary sheets with a LOTUS 123 spreadsheet file titled Raingage Headquarters. The spreadsheet provides, in table format, monthly summary precip for 1915-1993. Clarification and correction of data was made by Kris Havstad, Research Leader, USDA JER with the following statement: Dr. Havstad was able to correct these differences which occurred 1915 through 1974. In a few instances in the very early years, the Weather Bureau information is correct. In all other instance (noted) the record of choice should be the lotus spreadsheet file. This file was corrected and double checked, from the original records, by Bob Gibbens. He had actually made the corrections to the hard copy of this record for the Dec 1915, Nov 1917, Mar 1919, Feb 1921, and Oct 1921, entries where the weather Bureau record is correct, but the spreadsheet was not updated. Where either record could be in error, much more faith is put in the spreadsheet because Dr. Gibbens oversaw the spreadsheet entry from the written records. The recommendation to use the spreadsheet entry in these instances has been followed because we know who controlled entry of these data and we know their attention to detail. In summary, spreadsheet WK1 data used for monthly totals except for NOV 1917, MAR 1919, FEB 1921, OCT 1921 and JUL 1976 as per Kris Havstad, Director USDA Jornada Experimental Range. Monthly totals for these months are derived from daily NOAA Weather Bureau data for Jornada USDA Headquarters station. J.
