Stations are 30 meters apart. Measurements are taken at 30cm, 60cm, 90cm, 110cm, and 130cm. Measurements taken at 2 week intervals from April 1982 to 1987, monthly since. If any readings were not measured, the missing depths have a zero in the raw data set of count values. These are changed to "." in converted water content data set. Calculated water content values equal to less than zero are changed to zero in converted water content data set. Converted soil water content values are a volume/volume relationship and represent cm3 water/cm3 soil. Count rates are recorded for each depth and access tube. Five standard count rates are taken before and after, and after reading each 20 access tubes. Count rates are also taken in 6 lysimeters along the transect, at the above listed depths. If any readings were not made, the missing readings have a zero (0) in the raw data set of count values. These are changed to "." in converted water content data set. Calculated water content values equal to less than zero ( <0 ) are changed to zero in converted water content data set. Data from neutron probe data logger is dumped to disk. Raw count data is then converted to water content using a Fortran program called WC1#3900.FOR (water content for LTER-I transect using probe with serial # ending in 3900). Water content data is then sorted by i.d. number using a LOTUS 123 macro found in WC1_SORT.WQ1 which creates final version of water content data set for the month in a separate file. Two files per month are saved: raw count data (mmddyy-1.RAW; ex. 121189-1.RAW) and calculated/sorted data which is appended to the year's data (TRANSWCyy.DAT; ex. TRANSWC89.DAT). 15) Key literature (Citations that describe sampling procedures, [reference of a published paper, thesis, etc.]): ---------------------------------------------------------------- CPN Company 503 DR Hydroprobe Moisture Depth Gauge Operating Manual 16) Keywords (keywords that describe data set; maximum of 10): ---------------------------------------------------------------- soil water content, transects, lysimeter, spatial variability 17) Treatment of data: (List any programs used in analysis of the data): [Note: Programs should be appended and stored with this form.] ---------------------------------------------------------------- 1982 - Aug 1989. Raw data was processed with a LOTUS Symphony spreadsheet macro written by Dr. P. Wierenga's personnel. Raw data converted to soil water content values with macro. Sep 1989 - present. FORTRAN program used to convert raw data as downloaded from hydroprobe data logger to soil water content (cm3 water/cm3 soil). See attached for program (SWC#3900.FOR for probe serial #H32073900 and SWC#7085.FOR for probe serial #H36097085). Programs are same except for regression equation used in conversion. 18) Associated computer accounts: ---------------------------------------------------------------- 19) Files associated with this data set: ------------------------------------------------------------------------- File Type Codes: Type Code Definition ---- ---------- MD Metadata files DS Data files DE Data entry, verification, and analysis files OT Other (Any other related files) File Format Codes: ASCII, BINARY ------Metadata files------------------------------------ file type: MD file name: TRNSWC.PRJ description: Project documentation file format: Text file format type: ASCII file type: MD file name: TRNSWC.DSD description: Data set documentation file format: Text file format type: ASCII ------Data files---------------------------------------- file type: DS file name: PROBE.HIS description: Data set history log file format: Text file format type: ASCII file type: DS file name: description: Data file for year "yy" file format: Text file format type: ASCII ------Data entry, verification, and analysis files------ file type: DE file name: SWC3900.BAT description: MS-DOS Batch file for processing probe (serial #3900) data file format: Text file format type: ASCII file type: DE file name: SWC7085.BAT description: MS-DOS Batch file for processing probe (serial #7085) data file format: Text file format type: ASCII file type: DE file name: WC1#3900.EXE description: FORTRAN executable program code to process raw data for probe with serial number ending in 3900. file format: FORTRAN executable program format type: BINARY file type: DE file name: WC1#3900.FOR description: FORTRAN program source code to process raw data for probe with serial number ending in 3900. file format: Text file format type: ASCII file type: DE file name: WC1#7085.EXE description: FORTRAN executable program code to process raw data for probe with serial number ending in 7085. file format: FORTRAN executable program format type: BINARY file type: DE file name: WC1_SORT.WQ1 description: LOTUS 123 spreadsheet with macro file format: LOTUS 123 spreadsheet format type: BINARY file type: DE file name: WC2APEND.BAT description: MS-DOS Batch file to append new data to existing data file. file format: Text file format type: ASCII file type: DE file name: COPYSWC.BAT description: MS-DOS Batch file for backup on hard disk and floppy. file format: Text file format type: ASCII ------Other (Any other related files)------------------- file type: OT file name: NEUTRON.PRO description: Neutron probe field procedure file format: Text file format type: ASCII file type: OT file name: NEUTRON.DOC description: Neutron probe field procedure (Word for Windows) file format: Word for Windows format type: BINARY 20) Comments (Include any comments here that more fully describe this data set): ---------------------------------------------------------------- Data set is broken into separate files by year.
