+------------------------------------------------------------------+ | JORNADA LTER | | New Mexico State University | | Data Set Documentation Form | +------------------------------------------------------------------+ All Jornada Desert Site NSF/LTER data sets must be documented on the following form. This applies to any data set intended for permanent archiving. All raw data sets collected under the auspices of the Jornada NSF/LTER Program will be described by the following standardized form. Information that is not available at this time, must be included when available. For these fields, enter . For fields that will not have information, enter . See data manager for any questions regarding this form. -------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) Data set access (RESTRICTED or UNRESTRICTED): --------------------------------------------- UNRESTRICTED 2) Data set title: --------------- Small mammal trapping (LTER-II) 3) Project title: -------------- Small mammal trapping (LTER-II) 4) Responsible investigator(s): ---------------------------- Walter G. A grid of 20 traps is located on each consumer plot. Small mammals are trapped daily for a one-week period in the late spring and again in the late summer of each year. Data on species, sex, toe marks, weight, and reproductive condition are taken. Pitfall trap grids have been installed at three creosotebush sites, three grassland sites, three mesquite sites, and two tarbush sites. Jornada LTER II consumer plots during this period were located at T-WEST, T- EAST, M-RABB (2 grids), M-WELL, G-IBPE (2 grids), G-BASN, C-SAND (2 grids), and C-CALI sites. 13) Attributes measured: ------------------------------------------------------------------- Variable name: blank Number of columns between fields CCCCCCCC See attribute description Format: C = character (C3: Three characters [XXX]) I = integer (I2: Integer with two places [##]) F = floating point (F4.2: Total places with decimal point = 4, with 2 decimal places. Pitfall trap grids have been installed at three creosotebush sites, three grassland sites, three mesquite sites, and two tarbush sites. Each grid consists of four by five rows of traps at 10 meter intervals. A mammal live-trap is placed next to each pitfall trap. Traps are opened for one week in the late spring and one week in the late summer. Traps are baited with mixed seed chicken feed each evening, and checked each morning. Small mammals are removed from the traps and assigned individual numbers by removing a single digit from each foot and following the code on the diagram on the field data sheets. Species, sex, and measurement data are taken for each animal. 16) Key literature (Citations that describe sampling procedures, [reference of a published paper, thesis, etc.]): ---------------------------------------------------------------- 17) Keywords (keywords that describe data set; maximum of 10): ---------------------------------------------------------------- small mammals, animals, consumers, populations 18) Treatment of data: (List any programs used in analysis of the data): [Note: Programs should be appended and stored with this form.] ---------------------------------------------------------------- Field data are entered with D.A.V.E. data entry and verification program. 19) Associated computer accounts: ---------------------------------------------------------------- 20) Files associated with this data set: ---------------------------------------------------------------- A) Metadata files FILE NAME DESCRIPTION OF FILES ------------ ----------------------------------------------- SMAMMALS.PRJ Project documentation SMAMMALS.DSD Data set documentation ------------ ----------------------------------------------- B) Data files FILE NAME DESCRIPTION OF FILES ------------ ----------------------------------------------- SMAMMALS.DAT Data set file ------------ ----------------------------------------------- C) Data entry, verification, and analysis files FILE NAME DESCRIPTION OF FILES ------------ ----------------------------------------------- SMAMMALS.DED Data entry procedure documentation (ASCII) SMAMMALS.WK1 LOTUS 123 spreadsheet for data entry (Binary) SMAMMALS.IMG LOTUS 123 D.A.V.E. add-in data entry (Binary) & verification program ------------ ----------------------------------------------- D) Other (Any other related files.)
