+------------------------------------------------------------------+ | JORNADA LTER | | New Mexico State University | | Data Set Documentation Form | +------------------------------------------------------------------+ All Jornada Desert Site NSF/LTER data sets must be documented on the following form. This applies to any data set intended for permanent archiving. All raw data sets collected under the auspices of the Jornada NSF/LTER Program will be described by the following standardized form. Information that is not available at this time, must be included when available. See data manager for any questions regarding this form. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Dataset ID: DSL2005015 Project ID: PRL2005010 1) Data set access (RESTRICTED or UNRESTRICTED): ------------------------------------------------------------------------- UNRESTRICTED 2) Data set title: ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jornada Grasshopper Plot Herbaceous Vegetation Data 3) Project title: ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jornada Grasshopper and Vegetation Study 4) Responsible investigator(s): ------------------------------------------------------------------------- David Lightfoot, May1983-Sep1985 5) Date data collection commenced (mm/dd/yyyy): ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 05/1983 6) Date data collection terminated (mm/dd/yyyy or ONGOING): ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 09/1985 7) Expected duration of study: ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2.4 years (May 1983 - Sep 1985) 8) Frequency of measurement: ------------------------------------------------------------------------- May, July, September from 1983-1985 9) Researchers: (Personnel who will be obtaining data and who would need to be contacted directly if there is a problem in the raw data): ------------------------------------------------------------------------- David Lightfoot, May1983-Sep1985; Walter G. Whitford, May1983-Sep1985 10) Methods of recording (field data sheets, instrumental, etc.): ------------------------------------------------------------------------- field data sheets 11) Site location (Describe in sufficient detail that the site can be relocated): ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) Data set description (State the hypothesis and / or objectives which collection of data set addresses): ------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is data on annual herbaceous plants measured on Jornada grasshopper plots on the east bajada of the Dona Ana Mts. Three plots were situated on the bajada parallel to and 200m south of the LTER transect. Two additional sets of three plots were located 5km and 10km south of the LTER transect. Each plot was composed of two 50m belt transects, each divided into ten 5m2 quadrats. Annual plants were measured in the NE 1m2 of each quadrat, once in May, July and September in 1983, 1984 and 1985. All individuals of each species were counted and measured. A mean diameter, height, and the total number of individuals/1m2/quadrat were recorded. 13) Attributes measured: ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Variable Name example: AIRMAX Name used in data set header. Variable Format example: C = character (C3: Three characters [XXX]) I = integer (I2: Integer with two places [##]) F = floating point (F4.2: Total places with decimal point = 4, with 2 decimal places. [#.##]) Variable Mask example: mm/dd/yyyy Date where mm=month, dd=day, yyyy=year Exception Value Codes format: [code] = [description] example: 'Q' = questionable data Code = code (surrounded by single quotes) Note: Equal signs (=) are used to separate code and description. Note: Enter multiple Exception Value Codes on separate lines. Acceptable Value Type examples: defined list undefined list range defined list of ranges undefined list of ranges complex external list Acceptable Value Codes format: [code] = [description] example: C = Creosotebush Code = code Note: Equal signs (=) are used to separate code and description. Note: Enter multiple Exception Value Codes on separate lines. Note: Equal signs (=) are used to separate values and commas (,) are used to separate multiple value sets. Ranges of acceptable values are separated by a dashes. Lists of acceptable values are separated by commas. Asterick symbols (*) are reserved to indicate external lookup file listing. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- variable name: YY attribute description: year data collected measured units: N/A start column position: 1 variable format: I2 variable mask: N/A exception value codes: N/A acceptable value type: N/A acceptable value codes: N/A variable name: MM attribute description: month data collected measured units: N/A start column position: 3 variable format: I2 variable mask: N/A exception value codes: N/A acceptable value type: N/A acceptable value codes: N/A variable name: A attribute description: Plot number measured units: N/A start column position: 6 variable format: I2 variable mask: N/A exception value codes: N/A acceptable value type: range acceptable value codes: 10-18 variable name: B attribute description: Transect number measured units: N/A start column position: 9 variable format: I1 variable mask: N/A exception value codes: N/A acceptable value type: undefined list acceptable value codes: 1-2 variable name: C attribute description: Quadrat number measured units: N/A start column position: 12 variable format: I2 variable mask: N/A exception value codes: N/A acceptable value type: range acceptable value codes: 1-20 variable name: D attribute description: Plant species code measured units: N/A start column position: 14 variable format: I2 variable mask: N/A exception value codes: N/A acceptable value type: external list acceptable value codes: see file JGRASHOP.LST for complete species code listing variable name: E attribute description: Mean plant diameter measured units: cm start column position: 18 variable format: I3 variable mask: N/A exception value codes: N/A acceptable value type: N/A acceptable value codes: N/A variable name: F attribute description: Mean plant height measured units: cm start column position: 22 variable format: I3 variable mask: N/A exception value codes: N/A acceptable value type: N/A acceptable value codes: N/A variable name: G attribute description: Total number of individuals/m2/quadrat measured units: N/A start column position: 26 variable format: I3 variable mask: N/A exception value codes: N/A acceptable value type: N/A acceptable value codes: N/A 14) Methodology (Provide sufficient detail such that an unaware reader could repeat the described data collection procedures.) ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Place one square meter PVC pipe frame in NE corner of each quadrat (see abstract).
