This applies to any data set intended for permanent archiving.| | All raw data sets collected under the auspices of the Jornada Basin LTER (NSF/NMSU) and Jornada | | Experimental Range (USDA/ARS) will be described by the following standardized form. Information | | that is not available at this time, must be included when it becomes available. In addition, | | attributes measured for this data set must also be described on an Attribute Documentation Form. | | All forms are available online at http://jornada-www.nmsu.edu and from the data manager. | | See data manager for any questions regarding this form. | | | | The Project Documentation Form associated with this data set is used for description of the | | research project. | +--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------+ 1) Data set access (RESTRICTED or UNRESTRICTED): UNRESTRICTED 2) Dataset title (descriptive title including 'what, when, where' information): Small mammal trapping (LTER-II) 3) Project title (from Project form): Small mammal trapping (LTER-II) 4) Responsible investigator(s): Start End Date Date Name ---------- ---------- ----------------------------------------------------------- 06/05/1990 11/02/1990 Walter G. A grid of 20 traps is located on each consumer plot. Small mammals are trapped daily for a one-week period in the late spring and again in the late summer of each year. Data on species, sex, toe marks, weight, and reproductive condition are taken. Pitfall trap grids have been installed at three creosotebush sites, three grassland sites, three mesquite sites, and two tarbush sites. Jornada LTER II consumer plots during this period were located at T-WEST, T- EAST, M-RABB (2 grids), M-WELL, G-IBPE (2 grids), G-BASN, C-SAND (2 grids), and C-CALI sites. 13) Methodology (Provide sufficient detail such that an unaware reader could repeat the described data collection procedures.): Methods and locations. Pitfall trap grids have been installed at three creosotebush sites, three grassland sites, three mesquite sites, and two tarbush sites. Each grid consists of four by five rows of traps at 10 meter intervals. A mammal live-trap is placed next to each pitfall trap. Traps are opened for one week in the late spring and one week in the late summer. Traps are baited with mixed seed chicken feed each evening, and checked each morning. Small mammals are removed from the traps and assigned individual numbers by removing a single digit from each foot and following the code on the diagram on the field data sheets. Species, sex, and measurement data are taken for each animal. 14) Key literature (Citations that describe sampling procedures, [reference of a published paper, thesis, etc.]): 15) Keywords (keywords that describe data set; maximum of 10, comma-delimited): small mammals, animals, consumers, populations 16a) QA/QC: Date Entry by QA/QC Description ---------- ---------------------------- ---------------------------------------------- 16b) Treatment of data (List any programs used in analysis of the data[Note: Programs should be appended and stored with this form.]): Field data are entered with D.A.V.E. data entry and verification program. 17) Associated computer accounts: 18) Files associated with this data set: +-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | FIELD DESCRIPTIONS: | | | | File Format Type | | Type Definition ----------- | | ---- ---------- ASCII | | MD Metadata files BINARY | | DS Data files | | DE Data entry, verification, | | and analysis files | | OT Other (Any other related files) | | | | File Format Description | | examples: Text file examples: Dataset documentation | | Word document SAS analysis file | | Excel spreadsheet Project documentation | | Data entry program | | Data file | | Quadrat biomass, fall 1997, by species | | | +-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------+ File Format Type Filename (30 characters max.)
